Kovesi added she asked the High Council of Magistrates (CSM) to check the entire activity of the military prosecutors’ office, led by magistrate Dan Voinea until two months ago.

Investigators admitted the appeal against Voinea’s ruling for the start of a criminal investigation on Iliescu, on grounds that military prosecutors cannot probe civilians.

Kovesi said she was unpleasantly surprised to find several procedural errors in the miners’ riot file, considering the “prosecutor’s vast experience".

According to Voinea, Iliescu is accused of having called on the military to intervene against miners on June 13, 1990.

Romania’s former president is accused of a series of crimes among which accessory to murder, robbery, assault, rape, illegal deprivation of freedom and ill treatment.
