According to people close to the matter, Basescu called attention to the key role the High Council of Magistrates plays in remedying problems concerning Romania’s progress under the Mechanism of Cooperation and Verification.
The head of state reminded senators that, starting January 2011, the term of the judges that make up the Council will expire, and election procedures are challenged and even invalidated by certain courts, said the sources.
Wednesday, senators failed to validate the eleven judges to make up the High Council of Magistrates, after they did not find common ground on election procedures.
The Senate decided later Tuesday to summon senators in a plenary meeting Wednesday to validate the new members of the High Council of Magistrates, said people with direct knowledge of talks.
