The 75% wage increase approved by an order of the Agriculture Ministry, issued on February 26, will be applied retroactively starting January 5, 2010.

The minister’s order states the wage increase will be applied by the human resources management department and the European fund budget department.

Agriculture Ministry representatives said salary raises were granted following extra attribution entrustments which concern not only the human resources department, but also other departments within the ministry.

According to the sources, salary increases are granted retroactively starting the moment the respective attribution are carried out, but no earlier than April 14, 2009.

Under a EUR13 billion standby agreement signed with the International Monetary Fund last year, Romania has pledged to consolidate its finances and cut expenses to keep budget deficit under control.

In order to meet the IMF requirements, Romania enforced a new wage law which caused dissatisfaction among public sector employees and also drew up a new pension law, which is pending Parliament approval, to have high pensions reduced. The Government’s spending cuts have prompted wide social unrest.
