Romania Ranks 22nd In EU By 4 Mo Trade Balance

Romania ranked 22nd among European Union states by trade balance in the first four months of the year, with a EUR7 billion deficit, according to Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities.

Concerning the total trade of EU member states, the largest surplus was observed in Germany (EUR69.1 billion in January-April 2008), while the United Kingdom registered the largest deficit, of EUR44.6 billion.

Romania’s exports rose 17% in the first four months, at EUR10.7 billion, while imports rose 16%, at EUR17.8 billion.

Thus, the trade deficit rose 16% on the year, compared with 65.8% in the first four months of 2007.

As for the trade balance compared with countries outside EU, in May, Romania reported a EUR600 million deficit, similar with April, thus ranking 18th among the 27 EU states.

The first estimate for the May 2008 EU area trade balance gave a EUR21.5 billion deficit, compared with EUR14.7 billion in May 2007 and EUR15.4 billion in April 2008. Exports to states outside the EU dropped 4%, while imports were down 1.3%.
