“After Ford threw the glove and pledged to invest EUR675 million in the auto assembly plant Automobile Craiova, Renault easily picked it up as EUR600 million investments will add up to the over EUR1 billion already invested in Romania,” Tariceanu said at the opening of a new Renault plant in the southern region of the country.

The Prime Minister said he had talks with the general manager of Groupe Renault Romania François Fourmont about the automaker’s investment projects, but didn’t give further details.

Earlier Tuesday, Renault opened a six-speed gearbox plant worth EUR146 million near its Romanian carmaker Dacia, which produces the low-cost Logan model. The new plant’s output is destined solely for export.

Renault officials said investments in the gearbox plant will total EUR214 million by the end of 2010.
