Stanchev’s lawyer Alexandru Chiciu requested his client was allowed to leave Romania on grounds that his family, currently living in Monaco, might face expulsion if Stanchev does not go to Monaco and clarify the situation of his family.

Chiciu said Stanchev was never guilty of obstruction of justice and that he always collaborated with the prosecutors and met all the hearing deadlines.

The court admitted the defense’s argument and lifted the interdiction to leave the state, but mentioned Stanchev is to meet all the court dates during his trial.

Romanian prosecutors arrested Stanchev in November 2006, but later released him on condition that he would not leave Bucharest.

Prosecutors see him as the brains behind an industrial espionage network, whose goal was to obtain key documentation pertaining to the privatization of strategic industrial assets in order to win consultancy contracts.
