Serban is charged with providing the Romanian consul in Milan, Tiberiu Dinu, with the call list (comprising technical data and phone numbers) of a Romanian politician. Anti-corruption prosecutors cite Law 78/2000, article 12, letter b, which states that “using, whether directly or indirectly, of information which is not to be made public, or allowing unauthorized persons access to this information” is illegal and is punishable by one to five years imprisonment.

Prosecutors have requested the arrest of Cornel Serban, the former chief of DGIPI, Petre Pitcovici, the head of the General Anti-corruption Department, and businessman Gabriel Popoviciu. The former rector of the Bucharest University of Veterinary Medicine, Ioan Alecu, will not put into preventive custody, as he has co-operated with investigators.

Wednesday, Cornel Serban resigned from his position as head of DGIPI, after being detained Tuesday night by anti-corruption prosecutors.
