Romanian President Stars In Cheap Drama On Salary Hike – PM

Romanian Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu on Saturday said he witnessed a cheap drama, in which President Traian Basescu asked him additional data on the economic impact of salary raises, only to show that he was more interested in the upcoming elections than in the country’s welfare.

“I regret the president’s decision to promulgate the law on salary hike (for personnel in the educational system – e.n.) and I can draw only one conclusion, that Traian Basescu deems more important the results of the elections than what happens with Romania’s future,” Tariceanu said in a television show on Realitatea TV.

Tariceanu said he had employees of the ministries of finance and labor work overtime to present Basescu with data on the economic impact of salary increases, which showed that the measure had no budget support, and that he thought Basescu would consider the information presented to him. \

Tariceanu reiterated he would not back down on the teachers’ salary issue, even if it would cost him politically.

On Friday, Basescu announced he promulgated the parliament-approved law stipulating a 50% wage hike for education personnel.

According to the government, the law will jeopardize economic stability, as other categories of employees in the public sector would demand a 50% wage hike as well.
