Romanian Fixed Telephony Numbers Are Ten Digits Long As Of Tomorrow

Romanian fixed telephony service users will only be reachable, starting with October 1, if the callers dial the full ten digit national number (prefix + local number), for all local or national calls, the National Communications Authority announced.

"Calls to fixed telephony numbers dialed without a prefix will no longer go through. So far, the caller received a warning that the number has a new format, but starting tomorrow, they will receive a message saying the number they are calling is not in service o they will receive the invalid number tone," said a press release issued by the authority.

The single number for emergency calls – 112, as well as mobile telephony numbers, will keep their current format.

The format of short numbers has also changed, with a clear difference between national level public interest services and numbers for general interest local services.

The national numbers are now dialed using four digits by adding the digit 1 before the old number (958 has become 1958), while the local numbers receive the county prefix and are thus dialed using seven digits (982 has become 0232982 for Iasi county).

The conclusion of the National Numbering Plan (PNN) is a European requirement that Romania needs to observe.
