Romanian Businessman Gigi Becali Drops Request For Permission To Travel Abroad
Becali’s attorney, Gheorghita Mateut, told MEDIAFAX Monday that the Steaua FC owner will withdraw his request, saying that, in his opinion, such a request must be addressed by the prosecutors investigating his client and not the courts.
Becali forwarded a statement certified by a notary explaining he does not want to pursue this course.
Another of Becali’s lawyers, Catalin Dancu, told MEDIAFAX Monday that the appeal for a holiday in Monte Carlo is premature, as a request concerning the status of judicial control must be submitted on June 7, when the court’s ruling on his client being forbidden from leaving Bucharest and Ilfov County expires. Dancu added that in the June 7 European Parliament elections, Becali could win, earning parliamentary immunity.
The debate on Becali’s request before the Bucharest sector 1 Court to be allowed to leave the country for one month should have taken place Monday, but the court postponed it for two days, due to a procedural deficiency. By the end of the court’s agenda, one of Becali’s lawyers submitted a withdrawal of the action.
