Romanian Transporters To Stage Protests In Bucharest In Sept

Romanian transporter federation FORT will stage protests in capital Bucharest at the beginning of September, over “deplorable” road infrastructure and not having been paid overdue state debts, the federation said in a press release Thursday.

Transporters also complain that measures fighting piracy in road transportation are not efficiently and fully applied. According to the union federation, in the September 2008 and June 2010 interval, over 40% of transport operators ceased their activity or entered insolvency.

Romanian transporters cancelled their protests in April, after the Government met their demands and a decree fighting piracy in road transportation was published in the Official Journal.

Romanian transporters are also displeased with the fact that traffic checkups are currently carried out by three different control bodies and that authorities failed to apply real measures regarding freight transport on public roads, the press release reads.

Traffic authority ARP general manager Florian Coman said in June that the Transport Ministry wants to set up a department within ARP to implement, starting 2011, a system by which transporters are to be stopped for checkups only once.

Traffic checkups are currently made by three institutions subordinated to the Transport Ministry, namely the ARR, the Romanian Auto Registry and the public road company CNADNR, and by the police. Coman said that the new checkup methods would be included in the country’s new transport law. He added that traffic controls would be carried out only by the ARP and the police.
