Ten Police Officers’ Representatives To Meet Romanian President On Sunday For Talks
Marian Gruia, head of the National Union of Police Officers, told the president the reasons for which police officers have protested since Monday.
Gruia confirmed that ten representatives of the union will have talks with the head of state on Sunday, although Basescu suggested him initially that the delegation should be formed of six people.
Over 300 police officers have protested on Wednesday in Bucharest on the third consecutive day, demanding payment for overtime work.
Gruia said on Wednesday that nearly 40 Bulgarian police officers have joined them in the protest, as they too are dealing with similar problems in their country.
“The authorities are taking no measure, but we won’t stop, we cannot accept their mockery anymore. We’re taking into account to stop overtime work, as we can’t go on strike. If we don’t work overtime anymore and the deficit of 8,000 police workers is not covered, the number of crimes will increase substantially,” Gruia said.
Over 300 Romanian police officers protested Monday and Tuesday in front of the Government and the Presidential Palace demanding rent money and payment for overtime work, as well as the covering of the employee deficit in the public safety department.
Some 350 members of the Romanian Union of Police Officers and Customs Workers "Pro Lex" organized a two-hour protest on August 11 in front of the Ministry of Interior over the funds assigned to the sector and the unpaid rents for the upcoming months of nearly 12,000 officers.
