Each Romanian lawmaker not residing in Bucharest spent a average EUR13,000 for accommodation last year, and some received accommodation money even though they own apartments in Bucharest, the Institute for Public Policies said in a report on public costs for activities of lawmakers in the interval November 2006 - May 2008.

"Only in 2007, a whole year monitored by the Institute for Public Policies, about EUR13,000 were spent on the accommodation of one lawmaker, and this sum was calculated at the lowest prices charged by hotels that have contracts with the Chamber of Deputies," the Institute said in the report.
According to the document, former education minister Cristian Adomnitei received money from the budget of the Chamber of Deputies for accommodation “other than in hotels”, although he was also a minister and unfolded his activity at the government. The report notes the same situation for development minister Laszlo Borbely.
The report states ten deputies receive money for accommodation, although they have apartments in Bucharest. The list includes Conservative Party president Daniela Popa, who cashed RON4,374 for accommodation in November and December 2007, lei), democrat liberals Liviu Almasn and Viorel Constantinescu, independent lawmaker Dumitru Becsenescu, conservative Dragos Dumitriu, social democrats Pavel Todoran, Valeriu Zgonea and Valeriu Ungureanu and liberals Adrian Mihei and Gabriel Zamfir.
The Institute’s report also mentions three deputies (liberal Tiberiu Barbuletiu and social democrats Ovidiu Branzan and Renica Diaconescu) who bought or inherited property and notified the Chamber to no longer grant them accommodation money.
