Over 100 Pensioners, Party Members Protested At Govt HQ

Over 100 pensioners and members of the People’s and Social Protection Party, or PPPS, protested Wednesday at the government’s headquarters, with pensioners demanding a hike in the pension point of up to 60% of wages and party members promising to approve the hike if voted into the government.

Pensioners and party members came from several regions throughout the country. A leader of pensioners, Toader Cristea, said he asked all political parties to help pensioners come to Bucharest, but only conservatives, democrat liberals and social democrats helped.

Asked whether the presence of PPPS members at the pensioners’ protest is part of some sort of election campaign, Toader did not deny that may be the case.

"We are apolitical and we called on all political parties to help us. If PPPS decided to come and protest too, it’s their business. Yes, their action could be seen as election campaign,” Toader said.

PPPS members asked pensioners to vote for them, promising they would have a better life.

"We appeal to all pensioners in Romania. Wake up, we decide our own fate! Six thousand pensioners can rule Romania," a party leader said.
