An additional ten thousand copies of the Romanian translation of Salman Rushdie’s “The Satanic Verses” will be printed in about a week after the book sold out within hours after launch in some stores, Silviu Lupescu, general manager of Polirom publishing house, told MEDIAFAX.
‘The Satanic Verses’ To See 10,000 More Copies In A Week - Publisher
The publisher said the copies were set to be issued after the winter holidays, and the book will see even more copies if the book sells.
“The Satanic Verses”, translated by Dana Craciun was launched December 20 with a circulation of 5.000 copies, which were soon sold out.
Rushdie provoked outrage among Muslims in 1988, when he published his book. The Indian-born writer, 59, was forced to go into hiding for a decade after the late Imam Khomeini issued a Fatwa in 1989, sentencing him to death.
The Iranian Embassy in Bucharest and the Romanian Patriarchy disapproved the publishing of the book in Romanian. Publishers said a number of “strange” e-mails were received, but they have decided not to file any complaints for the time being.
A four-time winner of the Booker Prize for Fiction for his “Midnight’s Children", "Shame", "The Satanic Verses", "The Moor’s Last Sigh", Rushdie was knighted earlier this year by Britain’s Queen Elisabeth II .
Twenty years after launch, "The Satanic Verses", the most controversial book in history, still stirs violent street protests in Pakistan and Iran.
