A spokeswoman for the children’s hospital, Raluca Alexandru, told MEDIAFAX that two of the newborns were hospitalized for several days with skin-level infections, but have since been released, while the third victim is suffering from respiratory problems, with the bacteria detected in the newborn’s blood.
“All three were brought in from their homes, it was later found out that they were birthed at the Giulesti Maternity (…) They were brought in five days, two weeks and almost one month from birth, respectively. The one who is in a more serious condition is two weeks old,” the doctor told MEDIAFAX.
Romania’s Health Ministry officially confirmed two of the cases and said that inspections will be launched at the maternity clinic starting with Wednesday.
The clinic in case was previously closed shortly for disinfection towards the end of 2018, following tens of cases of newborns infected with the staphylococcus bacteria. Health inspectors issued fines totaling RON10,000 for the personnel at the time.
