Bread Prices In Romania Might Hike Starting May

Bread prices might increase starting May this year as higher wheat prices worldwide have driven Romanian producers into exporting, while the quantities sold will be brought back to the country at a higher price, said the head of the industry’s employers’ association Rompan.

"Unfortunately, recent developments, when the price of wheat rose by EUR30/ton, large quantities of wheat are being exported. If we export wheat now, we’ll buy it back later for higher prices, which will reflect in bread prices starting May,” Rompan president Aurel Popescu said Friday.

Starting last summer, companies in the bread and bakery sector have said bread prices would be increased gradually due to higher production costs. Romania’s wheat crop last year was one of the poorest since 1990 following a severe drought.

The country’s wheat crops last year amounted to some 3 million tons, down 44% compared to the previous year.

Romania’s total cereal production last year was below 7.5 million, half the production registered in 2006, of 15.7 million.
