Romanian President’s Daughter Submits EP Candidacy To Electoral Office

The youngest daughter of Romanian President Traian Basescu, Elena Basescu, submitted Monday at the Central Electoral Office her candidacy for a seat in the European Parliament.

She said the first thing she will do if she is elected will be to rejoin the Democratic Liberal Party, which she quit recently to run as independent in the EP election to be held on June 7.

"I brought 56 folders with 5,000 signatures each, which add up to a total 280,000 signatures, more than I had ever anticipated or hoped for,” Elena Basescu said.

Asked what she expects off this candidacy, the president’s daughter said she doesn’t expect anything.
 
"I simply don’t expect anything. I want to take things step by step. I haven’t started this race with my mind set on the win, but I am determined to try,” she said.
 
Asked what her priorities would be if she makes it into the European Parliament, she said the first thing to do would be to rejoin the Democratic Liberal Party, adding she would speak about priorities when her election campaign starts.
