Camataru was released after the Gaesti Court decided to accept the parole request made by a prison committee, with the decision staying uncontested.

The Bucharest underworld boss had recently been transferred to the Dambovita county prison from the Ploiesti Penitentiary, where he had served most of his latest prison term starting with December 2017.

The Ploiesti Court of Appeal decided in October 2018 to merge several sentences received by Balint into a single sentence of five years and eleven months in prison.

Balint and several other Bucharest underworld leaders were arraigned in 2013, after top anti-organized crime agency DIICOT de-established two of the capital’s most important crime groups. His brother Vasile Balint, known as Sile Camataru, was also sentenced to a five year and six months prison term. The two brothers have also served previous prison sentences for various criminal offences.
