Romania March Public Debt Rises To 30% Of GDP

Romania’s public debt rose to 30.06% of the gross domestic product at the end of March from 28.7% of the GDP a month earlier, mostly due to a EUR1 billion Eurobond sale, Finance Ministry data showed Friday.

The ministry sold at international auction five-year Eurobonds worth EUR1 billion at an annual yield of 5.17%, carrying a coupon of 5%. It also sold state paper on the domestic market worth around 4 billion lei (EUR1=RON4.2208) in March.

End-March, the country’s public debt stood at RON165.07 billion, compared with RON155.03 billion the previous month.

Government public debt was 93.6% of the total debt at the end of March, while local authorities’ debt accounted for 6.36%.

The public debt-to-GDP ratio was calculated using an estimated GDP of RON538.9 billion for this year. In 2009, the GDP stood at RON491.3 billion.
