He said, during the Hotel Investment Forum seminar, that Romania’s capital city Bucharest currently has four hotels under construction, nine units whose construction works are scheduled to begin in 12 months and 15 projects in the pre-planning phase.

Tourists traffic in the Bucharest hotels dropped by 20% in the first two months of the year, only one third of them being foreign citizens, according to the hotel industry representatives that attended the seminar.

Kurt Strohmayer, the general manager of JW Marriott hotel, said the occupancy rate of the Bucharest hotels and the average tariff per room will fall by 10% on the year in 2009, adding that the situation is normal in the view of the current financial turmoil.

According to research company STR Global, Bucharest hotels’ occupancy rate fell to 33.7% in January, from 58% in the similar month a year earlier, while the tariff per room lowered to 391 lei (EUR1=RON4.2908).

The occupancy degree of the hotels in Bucharest registered in 2008 one of the highest losses in Europe, falling by 19.6%, at 57%, due to a deterioration in the consumers’ trust, the lack of financing and the lower travel expenses, according to Deloitte Touche’s report.
