The union leader said the decision was made in a meeting of the union federation’s national council meeting, where unionists rejected the government’s “offer” to up public sector wages by 5% and to cut bonuses.

"My colleagues endorsed me to reject this so-called offer on Monday, when unions meet with Prime Minister Emil Boc. I will request a wage hike of at least 10% for healthcare employees and the keeping of bonuses. If this request is denies, as of Feb 10, all local organizations of our union federation will be consulted regarding the start of protests,” Petcu said.

Union leaders met Thursday with health minister Ion Bazac and said they could resume protests unless the protocol signed last year with the ministry is observed.

"At the end of 2008 we called off protests after we signed a protocol with the health minister, in which we required a 10% wage increase and the granting of loyalty and vacation bonuses,” Petcu said Wednesday.

Prime Minister Boc said Thursday after the cabinet meting that wages in the public sector will be increased this year by 5%, in two tranches: 3% in April and 2% in October.
