Comanescu said the bilateral meeting between Basescu and Putin opened new opportunities in relations between the two countries. He said economic opportunities in this context must be put to better use.

The minister added that Russia is a very important actor in global affairs, and Romania cannot disregard this fact.

Comanescu added Basescu would visit Moscow in Fall.

President Traian Basescu recently said he would visit Russia, probably in Fall, and he would hold talks on a direct contract with Gazprom, as Romania is currently importing gas through intermediaries.

He mentioned that, in his visit to Russia, he would be accompanies by an economic delegation, with the specific purpose of discussing such matters. The head of state added he would most likely perform this visit after the instatement of new Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.
