Security forces spokesman Marius Militaru said protesters tried to break outside from the enclosed space containing their demonstration, but their efforts were stifled. He said no one was injured during the incident.
Union leaders called on demonstrators to continue the rally peacefully, but protesters keep throwing eggs and plastic water bottles toward security forces.
Security forces in the area said about 10,000 people are protesting the government’s austerity measures that include wage cuts and public sector layoffs. A union leader, however, said the number of protesters is double.
Wednesday’s protest is scheduled to end at 7 p.m., but similar street actions have been announced for Thursday and Friday.
