The budget gap stood at 2.25% of the gross domestic product, 35 basis points higher than in January-April 2009, the ministry said.

In the first four months, the budget revenue stood at RON52.6 billion, down 1.2% on the year, on lower cash-ins from the value added tax and the income tax, according to Finance Ministry data.

The public expenditure rose 3.4% on the year to RON64.7 billion in January to April, on higher spending for goods and services and increased social payments.

In April alone, the budget deficit widened significantly, from RON8.22 billion, or 1.5% of the GDP, at the end of March.
