Two Romanian Parties Threaten To Initiate No-Confidence Motion Against Govt

However, the two parties have different reasons in mind. The PDL said to initiate a no-confidence motion to dismiss the government, if the latter fails to annul the first registration tax for cars. Social democrats would resort to the measure in order to call for early elections.

Earlier Tuesday, Emil Boc, head of the Democratic Liberal Party, said the party will initiate a no-confidence motion to dismiss the government, if the latter fails to annul the first registration tax for cars.

Boc said that if the government fails to take into consideration the position adopted by the Chamber of Deputies, the party would go ahead with initiating the no-confidence motion.

Boc said he counts on the support of the 158 MPs who voted in favor of the simple motion "Cancel the first registration tax," as well as on the common sense of the other MPs.

Early Tuesday, the Chamber of Deputies in plenary session adopted the simple motion "Cancel the first registration tax", 158 to 89 votes and seven abstentions.

The motion was backed by democrat liberals, who submitted it, far rightists and leftist social democrats.

Sources within the social democratic party said PSD might initiate, next week, a no-confidence motion against the government following the position adopted by the country’s Hungarian minority party UDMR with respect to the independence of the newly formed state of Kosovo.

The party’s National Council is to decide on initating the motion in the Friday meeting.

Social democrats said they are sure the motion would pass if voted by all social democrat, democrat liberals and greater Romania party members.

Sources with the party said that if the prime minister decides to eliminate UDMR members from government, then the motion would no longer be submitted.

UDMR MPs on Sunday urged the government to recognize the independence of Kosovo. A press release read that “Hungarians in Romania are naturally very interested in ethnic conflicts worldwide.”

On the other hand, sources from PSD said there is already an agreement between the country’s main parties regarding the draft law on introducing the uninominal voting system.
