U.S. Transfers Mohammad Munaf To Iraqi Custody – Paper

The attorney is reported to have heard from Munaf's family that the custody move had been completed this week.

Iraq has taken over custody of about 1,300 prisoners at Camp Bucca, where thousands of Iraqi citizens have served time after being arrested by the U.S. military during the seven-year war. Among those officially transferred to Iraqi custody was another American citizen, Mohammed Munaf, who was arrested in 2005 on charges that he aided in the kidnapping of three Romanian journalists, the paper writes.

Munaf had battled all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to prevent the transfer, saying he feared torture and execution would await him in an Iraqi prison. But American attorney Aziz Huq said he heard from Munaf's family that the custody move had been completed this week, the paper writes.

In April 2008, a Romanian court sentenced Munaf to ten years in prison and deprivation of rights for an additional five years after he serves his sentence. The sentence has remained definitive.
