The accident, which left two women and two men dead and another five people, among which a two-year-old girl, injured, occurred Friday night at 2.00 a.m., near Saliste, in the central Romanian county of Sibiu. The road was not icy. The driver of the microbus transporting Bulgarian citizens tried to overtake a row of cars and smashed into a truck on the opposite lane, was hit by a second truck and thrown into a van.
"The first investigations indicate the Bulgarian driver attempted to overtake a row of trucks and was hit by vehicles running on the opposite lane,” said Alin Pahontu, head of the Sibiu traffic police.
Rescue team and five ambulances arrived at the scene shortly, but it was already too late for four passengers.
"We found nine victims, of which four were dead and five injured with serious fractures," said doctor Teodora Draghici of the emergency rescue team.
The road was blocked for over two hours following the accident.
