Dumitru said that the Ministry will enforce a merger program and mass layoffs. Most of the layoffs will be operated within county departments, of which some are grossly overstaffed, said the minister.

Dumitru added that the staff cut will also affect the ministry and eight other subordinate institutions. According to the minister, no employees of payment agencies will be laid off.

The minister said he does not know whether the ministry will also have to eliminate one of its three state secretary positions. Dumitru added that the matter was discussed by the Government, but the final decision will be taken by Prime Minister Emil Boc and made public within one or two weeks.

People close to the matter told MEDIAFAX last week that Boc asked all ministers to prepare plans for the restructuring of their institutions by the following Cabinet meeting, scheduled for June 16. The cutback plan should include a reduced number of state secretaries and state agencies, as well as a 25% staff cut for each ministry.
