Romanian Senate Halves Fines For Unpaid Road Tolls

The Romanian Senate on Wednesday adopted a proposal halving fines for drivers with unpaid road tolls and eliminated the possibility for fines to be paid on the spot.

Senators adopted with 53 votes and four abstentions the draft law approving Government Emergency Ordinance no. 157/2007 amending Government Ordinance no. 15/2002 introducing the toll for the use of Romanian roads.
 
The normative act stipulates fines of RON250 – RON500 for drivers with unpaid road tolls, from the current RON500 -RON1,000.
 
According to another amendment, drivers may no longer pay the fines on the spot, but may pay half the fine within 48 hours.
