Romanian Deputies OK Law On Fighting Violence In Sports

Organizers of sport activities are liable to receive fines up to RON50,000 and suspension terms if they fail to observe norms such as banning spirits sale, distribution or consumption, posting obscene, racist, or religions banners etc.

In addition, organizers are not to allow at the stadiums drunken fans, or fans carrying weapons, torches or sharp objects.

In case of high-risk sport activities, the law imposes the presence at the stadium of local prefects or their representatives, as well as of an acting prosecutor.

“It is a modern bill, in accordance with European Union standards. The phenomenon (violence in sports – e.n.) started to get out of control. It was such madness in football worldwide and it started to spread in Romania as well,” the president of Romania’s Professional Football League, MP Dumitru Dragomir said.

Dragomir, the initiator of the draft law, mentioned the bill will offer people the chance to come to matches without fearing they might not be able to return home.
