A weaker exchange rate was computed by the central bank on January 5, at 4.2077 per euro.

Against the US dollar, the leu’s indicative fell almost 2.5% to 3.2759, the lowest level in more than a year.

The leu opened stronger against the euro Thursday, unlike the currencies in the region, with dealers suspecting a central bank intervention to prevent a steeper fall of the local currency.

Romania’s currency opened at 4.188/4.190 to the euro, from 4.195/4.197 at closing Wednesday.

The leu gained more ground afterwards until touching an intraday high at 4.178 per euro.

At around GMT1000, the leu traded at 4.182/4.185 per euro.

On the money market Thursday, overnight rates rose to 6%-6.5% a year, from 4.4%-4.9% a day earlier.
