The Bucharest Court of Appeals ruled Friday in favor of the one-month preventive arrest of prosecutor Nelu Carpen, head of the prosecution office in Buftea, a small town near capital Bucharest, and of lawyer Adrian Richartt Zamfirache, a former member of the Bucharest Bar.
The arrest ruling may be appealed with the Supreme Court.

Romania’s High Council of Magistrates Friday suspended Carpen from his position of prosecutor.

Anticorruption prosecutors detained Carpen, along two lawyers and two police officers and required their preventive arrest. Prosecutors said Carpen allegedly took bribes from several people involved in criminal trials, promising favorable court rulings, with the aid of lawyers and police officers.
