In his speech during the debate, the minister argued with MPs who tried to interrupt him and described the current judicial activity in Romania as “mostly positive”.

“The motion you filed has, in my opinion and after reading it, the content of a political declaration (…) I would be happy if you would read or evaluate it beyond political statements. Justice must be in the interest of the citizen, must allow the citizen to capitalize on his fundamental rights and liberties. You will agree that we must not reach a situation in where we defend the citizen from the judiciary.

The motion was filed by Romania’s Liberal Party, with the minister criticized for recent judicial decrees, the establishment of a section for investigating judicial offences and a “campaign” against the prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi, who is running for the leadership of the upcoming European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO).

Lower Chamber MPs will vote the motion on Wednesday. The motion is non-binding and the minister will not be forced to resign if it passes.
