The 37 suspects are investigated on 26 counts of fraud, 18 counts of forgery, eight counts of corruption and abuse of office, seven counts of aiding a criminal, three counts of leaking unauthorized information and one count of driving with a suspended license.

The suspects are accused of having fraudulently introduced 15 cars in Romania, stolen or rented from abroad. The cars were Audis, Mazdas, BMWs, Chryslers, Citroens, Opels, Volkswagens, Skodas, Mercedes Benz, Alfa Romeos, Nissans, Mitsubishis and Dacias.

Prosecutors say the cars were rented abroad from rent-a-car services and brought to Romania, where they got new, forged documents in view of registration. The car thieves had accomplices within Romanian license and registration departments and would later sell the cars.

The alleged criminal group has thus defrauded victims of over EUR200,000.

Investigators have a circle of 50 suspects to be brought in for questioning, following 44 searches conducted Wednesday morning at several license and registration offices in Bucharest and suspects’ homes.
