Romania’s Local Car Production Dn 62% On Yr In Jan, Car Exports Dn 30%

Romania’s local vehicle production, the bulk of which is contributed by Dacia, the local unit of France’s Renault, declined a sharp 62% on the year in January, to 9,482 units, while exports were down 30.7% to 8,943 units, the Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association, or APIA, said Friday.

In January 2008, Romania produced 24,927 vehicles and exported 12,897 vehicles.

Cars accounted for over 90% of the total (8,775 units) in January, but the number of cars made dropped 63.8%.

Romania made 707 commercial vehicles in January, up 6.3% compared to January last year, but no buses, the same as in January last year.

Exports were dominated by cars, which accounted for over 90% (8,242 units) of the total, but the number of din total, but the number of cars exported dropped 35.8%.

The only category of vehicles to see a rise in exports was that of commercial vehicles, where exports increased over 13 times, but with low volumes. Romania exported 701 commercial vehicles in January this year, compared to 52 in January last year, boosted by Dacia’s sales on commercial vehicles on several European markets.
