“On Tuesday, December 16, the US Embassy in Bucharest received a suspicious envelope containing an unidentified white powder. Embassy staff followed established protocol for handling suspicious articles,” the statement said.

The statement added tests will be conducted on the substance in the envelope.

The Embassy was not evacuated but was temporarily closed to the public, the statement read, and reopened later.

The embassy also thanked Romanian authorities for their quick response in giving assistance with this incident.

Romania’s Intelligence Agency, or SRI, has taken the envelope for safekeeping and it will send it for biologic tests on Wednesday, SRI spokesman Marius Bercaru said.

Bercaru said pyrotechnical tests revealed nothing suspicious.
