Melescanu stressed that the NATO Summit was the only issue debated during the defense council’s meeting and pointed out that the arrangements for the upcoming summit are going great.

General Henri Bentégeat, chairman of the European Union Military Committee, Friday said he met with Romanian President Traian Basescu who told him that Romania had not yet made a decision on troop deployment to Chad, stressing such a decision is for the defense council to make and nobody else.

The meeting came before the President’s meeting of the defense council, one day before the EU starts deploying its mission in Serbia’s breakaway region of Kosovo.

The European Union will deploy a mission of nearly 2.000, which is likely to declare its independence on Sunday.

According to EUObserver, the EU on Wednesday gave its final operational go-ahead to the mission to be deployed to Kosovo. The actual deployment is to start on Saturday morning, Feb. 16.

Romania’s national defense council in January approved the deployment in Kosovo of 175 police officers and security forces.
