The landslides “swallowed” two houses on Saturday, while two more houses had to be evacuated Sunday, Renga said.

He said the area is been monitored by members of the Emergency Committee and that the authorities took preventive measures against possible floods.

“The landslides might block the nearby Taraia River, which can cause floods,” Renga said.

He said the government will pay damages to the families affected by the landslides and their houses will be rebuilt on stable ground.

Another 15 houses in Mateesti locality are in danger of collapsing, Renga mentioned.
