EC Keeps Predictions On Romania’s Inflation At 5.7% In ’09 And 4% In ’10

The European Commission, or EC, kept its prognosis regarding Romania’s harmonized index of consumer prices for 2009 and 2010 at 5.7% and 4% respectively, despite signs that the financial crisis has significantly impacted Romania's economy.

EC’s winter prognosis sees Romania’s 2008 harmonized consumer price index at 7.9%, 10 basis points higher than 7.8% previously forecasted.

EC forecasts a severe drop of private consumption growth to 1.9% in 2009, from 8% in 2008.

The National Prognosis Commission has revised up, in its final fall prognosis report, its headline inflation forecast for 2008 to 6%, from 5.8% in its preliminary data, but maintained its headline inflation forecast for next year unchanged at 4.5%.
