The party said in a press release it is aware of Geoana’s ingrate position as both presidential candidate and Senate chairman, suspected by public opinion of taking advantage of his position in the election campaign. The democrat liberals added the Institute for Public Policies took notice of this aspect and suggested to Geoana to resign from the position Senate chairman.

The democrat liberals reminded Geoana that other presidential candidates, one representing the National Liberal Party and one the Democratic Union of the Magyars in Romania, resigned from the positions they held in Parliament.

“The Democratic Liberal Party expects Geoana will prove responsible and not take advantage of his position as Senate chairman in the election campaign (…) and resign from this public office,” the press release added.

In reply, Geoana dismissed the democrat liberals’ claims as mere political manipulation.

Liberal Crin Antonescu said Sunday, during a visit in Piatra Neamt, eastern Romania, he will resign from the position of vice-president of the Senate, saying that, since the election campaign is about to start, he will not be able to continue his activity in Parliament.
