Romanian Development Min Denies President’s Claims Of Biased Salary Hikes

The salaries of employees in the Romanian National Housing Agency (ANL) grew by 39% between 2005 and 2008 and the 4.4 times increase, claimed in the speech held by President Traian Basescu, is “an oversight” by the authors of the speech, said development minister Laszlo Borbely.

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Tuesday the Government is not honest, as, even though it opposes the increase of teacher salaries, it issued an Ordinance increasing the salaries of hospital managers, as well as an ordinance increasing 4.4 times the salaries in the National Housing Agency.

Borbely said that in fact, the mentioned ordinance lead to a 12% increase in salaries, thus these wages grew by a total 39% since 2005.

The minister added the housing agency is managed through its own funding and it is the beneficiary of a special law, which states the update of salaries with respect for inflation.

At the same time, the minister added the agency’s general manager has a net income, including all bonuses and seniority, of some 4,500 lei (EUR1 = RON3.6645).

In addition, people working with European funds receive bonuses worth 75% of their salary, a provision included in the 2006 legislation, and valid for all ministries.
