The victims were riding in the van.

According to the chief of the Constanta traffic police, Constantin Dancu, the accident occurred because of a technical malfunction in the truck, which tipped over crushing the van.

According to Constanta Traffic Police spokesperson Marius Ghita, the truck was going from Cernavoda to Medgidia, on National Road DN 22C. At kilometer 7, the left front tire exploded and the driver lost control of the vehicle, slightly hooking a Dacia Logan coming from the opposite direction. Immediately, the truck fell over the van traveling behind the Dacia Logan.

The exact number of people who died in the crash was not yet known at press time.

"So far, we believe there are four fatalities, but we cannot be sure that this is the number of people who were in the van. When we lift the truck, we will know exactly how many people there are in the wreckage," Ghita said.

Ghita added the impact was so powerful that the van was simply flattened.

At press time there were three SMURD crews on location, as well as crews from the county inspectorate for emergency situations, to prevent an explosion since there are fuel leaks.
