Romanian Govt: President Impeachment Ceases On Favorable Court Ruling
The Parliament can be dissolved if it rejects two propositions for a new Cabinet within 45 days, not 60 days, as currently stipulated in the Constitution.
Prime Minister Emil Boc on Wednesday explained that the head of state can be impeached, after the Parliament decided that with majority of votes, adding that, if the Constitutional Court rules the president has breached the Constitution, then the parliamentary impeachment procedure follows its normal steps, namely, a vote is held in Parliament and a referendum is called to oust the head of state.
Boc went on saying that if the Constitutional Court rules the head of state did not breach the Constitution, then, the parliamentary impeachment procedure ceases.
The Government on Wednesday passed a draft law to revise the country’s Constitution, which it forwarded to the president. Romania’s Constitution’ may be revised at the initiative of the head of state, the Government, by at least a quarter of deputies and senators, or by at least 500,000 citizens of voting age.
