Magyars Protest Against Romania’s Govt Policy In Chief Appointments – Mayor

Antal Arpad, former deputy of the Magyar Democratic Union In Romania and mayor of Sfantu Gheorghe, said Sunday the Magyars’ protest in Sfantu Gheorghe, central Romania, meant to express disapproval with the Government’s desire to split 50-50% the leadership positions in Covasna.

Antal said the leaders of the Magyar community stated clearly that they comprehend “politics logic”, but he thinks this cannot be used in the counties where the parties “that have 75% of the Romanian Parliament” obtained only 20, and 10% respectively of the votes in Covasna and Harghita in the legislative elections.

“If we want Romanians and Magyars live peacefully together, on the long term, the ethnic proportion has to be observed,” Antal said.

He added the desire of the Magyar community is that 75% of the leadership positions in Covasna and 85% of them in Harghita belonged to the Magyar community.

People attending the protest in Sfantu Gheorghe asked in a petition that head of state Traian Basescu withdraws his statements on territorial autonomy and the ethnic proportion be observed when the institution managers are appointed.
