Basescu stressed this is the reason why he chose Chisinau as his first future destination in his second term as president of Romania.

The head of state pointed out that the relation between Romania and Moldova will be based on „solidarity”, which, he added, means backing Moldova’s efforts to come closer to the European Union.

Basescu said the two countries stand high chances to enhance their bilateral relation based on trust, solidarity and common goals, after a harsh period which put Romania’s goodwill to the test.

„You are all aware of the special relation between Romania and its eastern neighbor. The two countries share a common history, the same language and culture. Romanians live on both sides of the River Prut, therefore, endorsing Moldova’s European aspirations represents a valuable project for me,” Basescu said.

According to Basescu, Romania will be an active supporter, at EU level, of Chisinau’s accession into „a structure where it belongs, historically speaking.”

Moldovan Foreign Minister Iurie Leanca said Basescu will be on official visit to Chisinau during January 27- 28.

Basescu’s two-day visit includes meetings with Moldova’s interim president Mihai Ghimpu, Prime Minister Vlad Filat and Chisinau mayor Dorin Chirtoaca.

Basescu will also address the Moldovan Parliament and go to Tiganca to visit the Cemetery of Romanian Heroes.
