Romanian School Teachers’ Base Wage To Increase To RON1,599 As Of Sept ‘09

The base salary of Romanian school teachers with a seniority of six to ten years will increase to 1,599 lei (EUR1=RON3.7482) in September 2009 from the current RON1,416, while a debutant will earn RON1,399 a month, from the current RON1,134.

A university lecturer with a seniority of six to ten years will earn a minimum RON1,700 compared to he current RON1,676, while the maximum base salary remains unchanged at RON2,914, according to the emergency ordinance  regarding teachers’ salaries approved by the government Monday and obtained by MEDIAFAX.
 
The act keeps unchanged the minim and maximum base salary limits for university teaching staff were kept unchanged.
 
Late October, when the head of state passed a law raising teachers’ salaries by 50%, the government issued an ordinance postponing its enforcement until April 2009.
 
On Monday, after the Senate rejected the delay, the government approved a 28% wage hike for staff in the education system, to be applied gradually based on existing revenue.
 
Tariceanu said the pay hike will be operated in two stages, on March 1, 2009 and September 1, 2009, respectively.
 
Earlier Tuesday, the government notified the Constitutional Court Tuesday that it repealed Monday the emergency ordinance postponing until April next year the enforcement of the law raising teachers’ wages by 50%, and the decision was sent to be published in the Official Gazette.
