Romanian Culture Ministry May Halt Refurbishment Of Several Historical Monuments

Romania’s Ministry of Culture could halt refurbishment work on several historical monuments and redirect resources to other projects, so as to more efficiently use the insufficient amounts received from the state budget, Minister Kelemen Hunor announced Saturday.

The minister said 64 million lei (EUR1=RON4.0923) has been allotted to refurbish some 280 monuments. „This amount is very low. We cannot start work on new projects. I’d rather we close a few sites where work is in an advanced stage and use the budget more efficiently. Unfortunately, the funds are 10-15 times less than what we need in 2010,” the minister said.

According to Kelemen Hunor, of the 30,000 historical monuments in the county, 60% are in need of repairs and restoration.

In the minister’s opinion, society should be made to understand that each individual and each community needs to look after the monuments. He also said that local authorities should chip in, as the Ministry cannot afford to carry out work on more than 280 sites.
