The provision is part of a legislative proposition amending Romania’s health reform and excludes treatment for voluntary alcohol intoxication from the list of services payable from the country’s health insurance fund.

Independent lawmaker Tudor Ciuhodaru, who pushed the amendment, said a large number of alcohol abusers end up in emergency rooms and their treatment requires significant financial resources and medical staff, which are scarce in Romania’s healthcare system.

The draft law is pending debates in a plenary meeting in Senate.
