Women’s Day and Men’s Day could become legal holidays in Romania according to a draft law based on a citizens’ initiative to declare May 5 Men’s Day and for both days to be considered legal holidays.
Women’s Day, Men’s Day Could Become Legal Holidays In Romania
In the motivation published in the Romanian Official Gazette, it is stated that although men and women are considered equal, it is "curious" that women alone have a dedicated holiday.
Moreover, it states that since Women’s Day is also Mother’s Day, Men’s Day is expected to also cover Father’s Day.
"(...) international studies and statistics indicate that Romanians are among the most stressed in Europe. A stressed people can become counterproductive in time. The introduction of two legal holidays could have a positive effect in the long run: a day off would be a legitimate breath of fresh air and people would be better motivated to resume their daily activities," the motivation reads.
Moreover, initiators say “Romania has the least legal holidays among European Union states, only eight days a year."
"Slovenia has 18, Slovakia 15, Bulgaria 13, Poland 12, Austria 15, Malta 14, France 11, etc," it added.
According to the proposal submitted for debate in Parliament, March 8 (Women’s day) and May 5 (Men’s Day) would be declared days off.
